Artist Talk – Phi Phi Oanh & Lacquer
Sun 18 Dec 2016, 4.30 – 6 pm
Manzi Art Space
From Manzi:
manzi proudly presents a very special talk with visual artist Phi Phi Oanh on the occasion of her solo show ‘Scry’ at manzi this month.
At the talk, Phi Phi Oanh will share with audience her practice and research on lacquer which, according to her, is much more than an image – making medium.
“It seems almost anachronistic today to talk about medium in the context of contemporary arts and painting. However, to me this substance Sơn Ta is much more than an image-making medium. It is a cultural medium that has embodied all of the major dialectical changes in Vietnamese society through the changes in its forms and usage. As painting, tranh sơn mài is part of a history of otherness.” – Phi Phi Oanh
The talk will be conducted in English with Vietnamese translation. Due to limited capacity, please register at [email protected] before 11.00 a.m. Saturday, 17 Dec.
