From Goethe Institut:

Stigmergy is a mechanism of indirect coordination between agents and/or actions, the key term for the working process and the dance project itself. The principle is that the trace left in the environment by an action stimulates the performance of a next action, by the same or a different agent. In that way, subsequent actions tend to reinforce and build on each other, leading to the spontaneous emergence of coherent, apparently systematic activity. Stigmergy is a form of self-organization. It produces complex, seemingly intelligent structures, without need for any planning, control, or even direct communication between the agents. As such it supports efficient collaboration between very different agents. Stigmergy has an influence on the structure of the piece, its dramaturgy and the use of materials and props.

The first version of STIGMERGY was developed in 2016 in the frame of the project MATERIA PRIMA, an interdisciplinary experiment about the relation between movement, music/sound, light and space. Involved were 33 dancers, 15 musicians, 6 choreographers and the three composers Manfred Trojahn and Gebrüder Teichmann. The premiere was in the church St. Martin in Kassel in the frame of „Körperstürme – Festival for Dance and Contemporary Music“.

In Stigmery (extended version) scores and materials from MATERIA PRIMA will be newly developed and rearranged to a composition by Marc André.
