From the organizer:

You are invited to “SURREALITY / REALITY” exhibition by Le Nguyen Manh, Pham Huy Thong, Nguyen Doan Ninh, Vu Muoi, Nguyen Vinh Trung and Phuong Vu Manh. This is a special exhibition by Vietnamese artists whose art practices follow the surrealistic style.

What is a surrealistic painting?

Not everyone knows and understands this, even among artists or art critics in Vietnam. Therefore, VICAS ART STUDIO wishes to introduce this exhibition to the art community, collectors and artists to show how surrealism has been expressed in Vietnam.

There is variety of ways to understand surrealism. I do not seek to go so much into discussing about it, but rather present my own point of view and take that as the ground for curating this exhibition, which is:

1. There are different spaces and times connected in some certain logic in the same artwork (co-existing).
2. The artworks express the artists’ spirit of imagination and romance
3. They also show the artists’ skillful realism techniques

Pham Huy Thong’s paintings are full of ideas about social and human issues; his expression is quite witty, though somewhat ironic and critical;

Le Nguyen Manh paintings are so classically romantic, yet their characters are always associated with contemporary figures.

Vu Muoi’s paintings are embedded with the nineteenth-century romance, yet his language is so much modern;

Nguyen Doan Ninh often surprises audiences as he expresses lyrically Oriental philosophies or traditional symbols of humanity and culture.

Nguyen Vinh Trung’s paintings are of a little bit dreaming and fantasy but closer to real life than the rest.

The paintings of Hoang Khanh Du, a Tày man, are the most unique among all. His paintings are a typical example of the extension of the ethnic tradition in modern society, the co-existence of the past – future, divine – human. The art language in his paintings is especially new, such a difference from the refined style of Classical surrealism school. Hence, we can consider him as a Neo-surrealist.

Hopefully, after seeing the exhibition, you may see that even with 6 distinctive expressions of our 6 artists / 6 individuals, the Exhibition still presents a shared spirit: in surreality finds reality, in surreality finds reality. That’s why this exhibition is titled “SURREALITY / REALITY”.
