From the organizers:
From what did Tran Anh Hung take inspiration for the long shots, the special aura of a woman’s image, or the way the characters move in each film?
The answer, according to the director, is the works of Kenji Mizoguchi, one of the four master in film directing of Japanese cinema in the heyday. According to Tran Anh Hung, among many of Mizoguchi’s archived works, “Sansho the Bailiff” (1954) is one of the best and has the most profound influence to his style.
To enjoy one of the best Asian films of all time and chat with director Tran Anh Hung, we invite you to join Toong in “Flashback Now 02 | Sansho the Bailiff”.
The event takes place simultaneously at Toong Trang Thi (Hanoi) and Toong 126 Minh Khai (HCMC).
▪ World cinema master Kenji Mizoguchi had a formidable career but so far many of his valuable works have been lost. He was one of the world’s most acclaimed Japanese directors and screenwriters. According to director Tran Anh Hung, “Since 1939, Mizsoguchi had started to realize the idea of ‘one scene / one shot’ which, when improved later on, became his own unique style: Long shot with amazing charm”. His other notable works include The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums (1939), The Life of Oharu (1952) and Sansho the Bailiff (1954), Ugetsu (1953).
▪ Director Tran Anh Hung is known as a filmmaker who breaks out from the traditional conventions of fine arts, blending philosophy with beauty and the most sophisticated sensations. 3 of his acclaimed works about Vietnam include: The Scent of Green Papaya (1993), Cyclo (1994), The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000). His other notable works include Norwegian Wood (2010) and Eternity (2016).
