Colors of Hanoi – A look through West Lake area.
Hanoi is a diverse city, but the perception of its characteristics varies greatly among citizens, visitors and authorities. How to identify these characteristics as objectively as possible, before mentioning respect and integrate them in architectural designs or conservation proposals, is not a simple task.
The seminar topic is part of the speaker’s doctoral thesis, who is a practicing architect and a lecturer at Hanoi Architectural University. As the topic suggests, we will discuss Hanoi’s identity through a special landscape. That is the West Lake, a land of nature and history, which was still a suburban area not long ago but is now witnessing a massive urbanization process to become the new center of the capital city in the future.
As an architect, the author, without a doubt, prioritized morphology when he begins his research. However, it quickly becomes clear that the problem of identity will not be solved only from a normal morphological perspective without a multi-disciplinary approach. An approach that is solely based on morphology implies many risks, especially when the relationship between forms and meanings, which is essential for creating a message or impression of identity, has never been such blurred as in today’s postmodern society. This is further confirmed in the context of the local culture, where people are dominated by the Asian harmonizing mindset instead of Western analytical thinking.
