From the organizer:

The Ho Chi Minh City Ballet, Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will present a concert on Saturday September 28 featuring Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Bui Cong Duy as soloist.

Seeing that Bui Cong Duy is one of Vietnam’s finest violinists, and maybe the finest of them all, and that Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is perhaps the best-loved of all violin concertos, this is most certainly a concert to look out for.

LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN – Overture “Die Weihe des Hauses”, op.124
FELIX MENDELSSOHN – Violin Concerto in E Minor, op. 64

GEORGES BIZET – L’Arlésienne Suite No. 1 & No. 2

The concert opens with an overture by Beethoven, “Die Weihe des Hauses”, and concludes after the interval with the two orchestral suites from L’Arlesienne by Bizet. “Die Weihe des Hauses” means “the consecration of the house” and was written by Beethoven in 1822. It was later performed in 1824 as the opening item of the concert in which his Symphony No 9 received its premiere.

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was premiered in 1845, though Mendelssohn himself was unable to conduct it due to illness. It was an immediate success, and has remained hugely popular so ever since. It is one of the greatest of all violin concertos.

Georges Bizet is best known for his opera Carmen (1875). Three years earlier, in 1872, he composed incidental music for a play called L’Arlesienne (‘the girl from Arles’, a town in southern France). This music is now best known in the form of two orchestral suites made from the original music.

The concert will be conducted by the Polish conductor Wojciech Czepiel. He was last seen in Saigon on June 2 when he conducted the concert “Music of the German Masters”.

Bùi Công Duy: winner of the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 3rd International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in 1997. Other of his competition successes include First Prize at the Zakhar Bron International Violin Competition in Novosibirsk, Russia (1995), First Prize at the Demidov International Violin Competition in Ekaterinburg, Russia (1993)… Mr.Duy has served as a jury member at the 8th Tchaikovsky International Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow in 2014, the Demidov International Violin Competition in Ekaterinburg in 2009.

He has developed his career to become an international soloist and pedagogue. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras worldwide including: Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, England, Russia, Denmark, Norway, China, Japan… and Vietnam. At present, Dr. Bui Cong Duy is Chair of the String Department at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. He gained the state recognition of Meritorious Artist in 2015.
