From the organizer:

The Ho Chi Minh City Ballet, Symphony Orchestra and Opera [HBSO] will revive one of its most popular full-length, classical ballets, “Giselle”, on Saturday October 19 and Sunday October 20, in the Saigon Opera House.

Many composers are only known for their compositions for ballets. One of them is Adolphe Adam, who is most remembered today for his musical work for “Giselle”.

The work tells a story of a young peasant girl, Giselle, who falls in love with a young noble man, Albrecht (or Albert), who is in reality has promised to marry someone else. It contains some supernatural characters called the Wilis. They are the souls of dead girls who died unmarried, and they have the power to control and destroy unfaithful men (such as Albert), because they all died of broken hearts. However, at the end, Giselle defends Albert with the power of her great love.

Watch a rehearsal of “Giselle” by HBSO artists in 2018:

“Giselle” will be performed by Do Hoang Khang Ninh and Albert by Ho Phi Diep. The role of Hilarion, another man who loves Giselle, will be played by Meritorious Artist Dam Duc Nhuan. It is produced by Yuki Hiroshige and Chloe Glemot. Yuki Hiroshige also dances the part of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis.

“Giselle” is one of the great works of the classical ballet world, with visually strong roles for the corps de ballet (the equivalent of the chorus in opera) as well as for the leading solo dancers.

There are currently three productions of “Giselle” touring in the UK alone. In one of them, influenced by the #me/too movement, Albert is killed at the end, because of his supposedly deceitful behavior.

The work was premiered in 1841 and was an immediate success. Several features of what we now see as classical ballet were first seen here. But “Giselle” gained its modern incarnation in the early 20th century in revivals staged in Russia by the famous French choreographer Marius Petipa.
