From the organizer:

The Thang Duong Nhap That video art exhibition at the Nguy Nhu Kon Tum lecture hall in the “University of Hanoi” building at 19 Le Thanh Tong is a highlight of the grand Indochina Sense exhibition held at this location. This artwork, created by visual artists Trieu Minh Hai and Vien Hong Quang, combines digitally processed black-and-white photos with video art and animations. It is a collaboration with painter and researcher Tran Hau Yen The and researcher Dr. Pham Long, offering a unique fusion of art, history, and digital innovation.

Thang Duong Nhap That is a large line of Chinese characters written on the central gate of the oil painting by artist Victor Tardieu in the main lecture hall of the Indochina University, now known as the Nguy Nhu Kon Tum lecture hall of the Hanoi National University. This line became the unofficial name of the work and implies the manifestation and erudition of knowledge.

Victor Tardieu’s painting is an enormous 11x7m masterpiece, painted in a Western style but featuring distinctly Vietnamese content. Though recreated in 2006 and more widely known today, its original journey and the thoughts of the artist from a century ago remain shrouded in mystery. This video art project, initiated by artist Tran Hau Yen The, Dr. Pham Long, and engineer Vien Hong Quang, along with artist Trieu Minh Hai, aims to authentically recreate the original piece. By combining AI technology with artistic, historical, and sociological analysis, this work unveils profound, forgotten humanistic values. The video art offers a timeless, immersive experience of an unparalleled masterpiece of Indochinese art.

For this exhibition, artists have taken black-and-white photos, used AI to learn colors from the original oil paintings, and combined video art with animation, bringing the painting to “life” with figures that appear to exist in a “real” world within the artwork. The Thang Duong Nhap That video art exhibition revitalizes Victor Tardieu’s painting, offering viewers a unique artistic experience alongside a profound message honoring knowledge, which is fitting for this academic space. Additionally, it introduces the history and beauty of Indochina art, symbolizing cultural fusion. Victor Tardieu, the artist, was the first principal who founded the Indochina School of Fine Arts at Indochina University in 1924 and he played a significant role in shaping the Indochina art style.

The video art exhibition Thang Duong Nhap That is part of the exhibition cluster Indochina Sense, within the framework of the Hanoi Festival of Creative Design 2024 from November 9-17, 2024.
