From the organizer:

H2Q Dance Company will present a 70-minute contemporary Hip Hop dance performance titled “129BPM: Động Phách Tách Kén”. This marks the first (proper) independent production by choreographer Bui Ngoc Quan in Vietnam after over 20 years of working abroad with one of the most renowned dance companies, Les Ballet C de la B, in Belgium.

Featuring live music performed by the duo Tiny Giant (Vietnam-Australia) and drummer Dan Duong, along with eight talented street dancers and a unique stage and lighting design created by German artist Mara Madeleine Pieler, the performance presents a new experiment with Hip Hop on the Vietnamese stage. It challenges the limits of the body and explores the complexities of human relationships, from new expressive possibilities of Hip Hop dance to the question of “How to live together with differences?”
The project is produced by H2Q Dance Company in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Ho Chi Minh City, with the support of media partners Co Dong, Kontribute, and Mini Creative Studio.

129BPM: Động phách tách kén invites you into a multi-sensory journey: watch, listen, feel then sense. Guiding each beat, weaving the core skeleton of the performance is the magical sound crystallized from communal sound experiences, from a variety of Vietnamese-inspired instruments to hip hop variations, by wizard duo Tiny Giant featuring drummer Dan Duong, which will all be performed live on stage. There, choreographer Bui Ngoc Quan proposed unexpected friction situations between dancers and sound artists, between performers and space and time. Situated with the force to consider the relationship between themselves and others, the people on stage constantly face questions about presence and existence. How to assert your own space and voice but still find a way to live together with other individuals? Standing, sitting, lying down, gliding, flying, jumping, rolling, twisting, compressing, releasing — they move endlessly in the process of confronting this question, until they are completely exhausted. At the most fragile and vulnerable moment on stage, when everything is pushed to the limit, what truth will be revealed in both performers and viewers?

With “Động” in the sense of moving, changing, vibrating; “Phách” meaning mind and soul or rhythm unit; “Tách” in the sense of detaching, deconstructing; “Kén” in terms of cocoon, case, shelter, the spectators can bring the instructions above into the auditorium where the magic begins, or simply prepare an innocent spirit and get ready to break the cocoon with the artists!

The performance is the beginning of a long journey that H2Q Dance Company aims to build a community of dance artists with independent creative thinking, constantly proposing and experimenting with performance methods and ready to explore diverse artistic practices. From there, high-quality contemporary performance works would have the potential to be introduced at dance festivals in the region and worldwide.
