From the organizer:

The inaugural concerts of the Hanoi New Music Ensemble will focus exclusively on Vietnamese composers in three concerts October 25 at the Old Quarter Cultural Exchange Center 50 Dao Duy Tu str. in the Old quarter, October 29 at the Manzi Art Space 14 Phan Huy Ich in Ba Dinh dist, and October 31 in the Grand Hall of the Vietnam National Academy of Music in 77 Hao Nam str, in Dong Da dist. Conducted by the group’s artistic advisor, Grammy Award-winner Jeff von der Schmidt, the three programs will include music by Nguyen Thien Dao, Vu Nhat Tan, Kim Ngoc Tran, Dang Huu Phuc, Dang Hong Anh and Nguyen Minh Nhat.

Mr. Jeff von der Schmidt says from Los Angeles: “I’m excited to begin this important ensemble with a very interesting set of works by Vietnamese composers spanning three generations. Vietnam is, for me, one of the most interesting places in Asia for new music, with composers across generations having studied with 20th century giants Olivier Messiaen and Karlheinz Stockhausen, among others. Given hard work together over the next few years, I think the energy of my home city of Los Angeles will mix well with the energy of Hanoi, yielding international results and bringing Vietnamese new music to the world scene.

The program is made possible by the cooperation of:

– Vietnam National Academy of Music
– Song Hong Group
– Dom Dom the Hub for Experimental Music
– Los Angeles International New Music Festival
– Jeff von der Schmidt conductor
