Concert with OvO - Wuu - Sound Awakener - De

Sun 15 May 2016, 7 pm
REC Room, Floor 20, Hanoi Creative City, 1 Luong Yen, Hanoi

From The Onion Cellar:

This is perhaps not so obvious, but anyone who has been to one of the live gigs The Onion Cellar put on circa 2013, 2014 – and how could one ever forget about Zeni Geva, The Observatory, MoE, about Staer, CoCC, or Proportions? – might have realised that dark, noisy, violent and extreme ‘rock-ish and metal-ish’ musics form an important part of our multi-faceted identity.

And after a considerably lengthy absence from the live stages of Vietnam, we are happy to turn up the volume to 11 again, with this REC Room Hanoi debut co-headlined by ‘minimal extreme-metalists’ / giants of the global left-field underground OVO (Italy) and Vietnamese-grindcore purveyors WỪU – a name that perhaps needs no introduction; plus support from two young, promising acts representative of the new crop of Vietnamese talents: SOUND AWAKENER (noise) and ĐẺ (grindcore).

Obviously The Onion Cellar’s noisiest gig to date – which does say something. Brace yourself.

OVO (‘minimal extreme metal’, Italy)

OvO’s drummer Bruno Dorella describing the duo (via numerous interviews):

“A little masked girl singing like the scariest growler in her made up language, torturing a detuned guitar. A big masked guy playing a little drum set without a kick, just using his arms, and sounding like a double-kick heavy metal drummer.

I met Stefania at a Sepultura show, in 1996. We both grew up with punk, metal and hardcore. We still listen to them, but we’re open to every kind of music.”

“..,and I guess we’ll never play a standard one. Whenever we play something it can sound more like sludge, noise, doom, black, stoner, rock and roll, but I think I’m not too arrogant if I say that there’s nothing else like OvO. And I don’t even think we’re so strange and bizarre.

She’s a natural born phenomenon. Her voice sounds like a trained opera singer mixed with the wildest male growler linked to a chain of weird pedal effects… but it’s all natural and she does it without any training.”

“Considering the buzz surrounding the band and their music, the demand for trippy, demonic fem-metal is active and healthy.” (Blistering website on OvO)

WỪU (grindcore, Saigon)

After a lengthy hiatus, ‘the geniuses are now back’.

“WỪU don’t spare much in their arsenal, laying down all manner of blasts, shreds, breakdowns, death metal riffs, punk riffs, screams, growls, pig squeals, yelps and more besides.

Named after a local hero in the war against the Colonial French, Vietnamese grindcore powerhouse WỪU are just as furious and uncompromising as their namesake.

Bringing it more than the standard grindcore influences, their 2011 debut ‘888’ takes in everything from old school death metal to more experimental, eclectic and electronic styles, bringing them to the attention of internet label Grindcore Karaoke run by Arogaphobic Nosebleed’s J Randall. WỪU’s second album – Hoang Tưởng (Paranoia) – came out in 2012 via Bloody Chunks Records, a label run by Trung Loki, key member of WỪU and numerous other extreme bands of Saigon.” (Obscene Extreme festival)

SOUND AWAKENER (noise, Hà Nội)

The experimental musician and sound artist behind the alias Sound Awakener has been composing and playing experimental music since 2011. She has been creating sonic waves in Hanoi’s underground music scene for the last couple of years. With an extraordinary understanding of tones and tunes and an ear for everyday sounds she can turn into music she works both on solo projects and has teamed up with artists working across various media and from around the world to add audio elements to visual experiences.

ĐẺ (grindcore, Hà Nội / Sài Gòn)

ĐẺ was founded in early 2016 by 3 young members Đức Lùn, Hưng Béo and Tín Mập. Even though they have performed live twice the band have never had a proper practice together. That explains their freestyle performance influenced by noise and experimental.
