Jean-Paul Sartre said that he had written this book – a small autobiography of his childhood – to say goodbye to literature, and he wanted it to be a farewell “in beautiful writing.” And it is a strange autobiography, a strange farewell to a very high level of virtuosity, accompanied by deep thoughts and philosophical analyzes on many fundamental problems of society, the human condition, nature and mission of literature and art… This book is not directly related to topical issues like the rest of the committed literature of Sartre. This is the reason why French literary critics have considered it as a paradoxical farewell to literature.
