From L’Espace:

You are invited to the seminar “The Historical Evolutions of the Figure of Confucius in China” with our guest speaker Anne Cheng.

Although the figure of Confucius (551-479) seems to create a cultural phenomenon that blends with the fate of the Chinese civilization, his appearance in the Analects remains enigmatic and paradoxical: unlike the figures from the same era, such as the Buddha or presocratics, he was neither a father of a school of thought nor the founder of a religion. At a glance, his philosophy appears rather practical, his teachings obvious, and he himself was not far from considering his own life as a failure. Why do Confucius have an exceptional historical role? The conference will try to explain the everlasting values of his teachings which, despite many vicissitudes, have been China’s source of inspiration for 2,500 years, and currently experience a renaissance at the moment.
