From the organizer:

The Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will stage an evening of chamber music in the Saigon Opera House on Tuesday October 9.

Chamber music is music written to be played in a room rather than a concert hall – “chamber” is an old word for “room”. But it can of course be played in a larger auditorium too, as HBSO will demonstrate.

In the time of Mozart large-scale works were often also issued in “chamber” form, so that musical families could play them at home. But chamber music now has its own independent status, and indeed the string quartet is considered one of the most prestigious of musical forms.

The HBSO concert avoids most of the obvious candidates for inclusion. There is no Bach, no Mozart, no Beethoven, no Brahms, no Dvorak, and so on. There are also no string quartets as such, though one appears in an important Prokofiev item. Instead, the organizers have by and large sought out less familiar works.

There are items, for instance, by little-known composers such as Moritz Moszkowski (Suite for Two Violins and Piano) and Henrich Baermann (Adagio for Clarinet and Strings).

Other works featured are Kodaly’s Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Schumann’s Two Fantasy Pieces for Cello and Piano and Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes for Clarinet, String Quartet and Piano.

HBSO is extending the meaning of “chamber music” in the second half of the evening to include three pieces that require a string orchestra, and the concert ends with Elgar’s Serenade for Strings in E Minor in which there are no soloists at all. Tran Nhat Minh will conduct these final items.

Among the prominent soloists due to appear are acclaimed Japanese clarinetist Shuhei Isobe, celebrated Vietnamese viola player Pham Vu Thien Bao, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Tan Anh (cello), violinist Le Minh Hien, pianist Ju Sun Young, and the concertmaster of the HBSO Orchestra, Tang Thanh Nam.
