“Variétés Tonkinoises” by Henri Souvignet is considered as a guide to Annamese customs and institutions, a sort of reflection on the most important issues of their lives.
Henri Emmanuel SOUVIGNET was born on December 25, 1855 in Monistrol-sur-Loire, diocese of Le Puy, Haute Loire, in a family of landowners.
In 1882, Henri-Emmanuel arrived in Tonkin at the time of the acute disputes between France and the Court of Hue, and did his training as a young missionary in 1883-1884 in Ke So, in the south of Hanoi, residence of the Apostolic Vicars of Tonkin from 1860 to 1886.
He assimilated everything related to the life of the country. His knowledge of Vietnamese laws and customs has enabled him to provide valuable services to the Mission and the entire population of the region. He was interested in history, ethnology, legislation, Vietnamese religious movements, linguistics and architecture. In 1903, under the pseudonym A+B, he published Variétés Tonkinoises of which profit from the sales were used to build the Phu Ly church, completed in 1907.
