You are invited to “Ecology and Other Matters in The Roots of Heaven by Romain Gary” on the occasion of the book launch for its Vietnamese edition, with the participation of Pham Xuan Nguyen.
Set in the French Equatorial Africa in the middle of the 20th century, amidst the war for independence, Morel wanted to stop the extermination of elephants. He is facing commercial settlers and ivory traffickers and Africans for whom meat is a source of subsistence food.
The elephants in my novel are completely not allegories: they are of flesh and blood, just like human rights…”, wrote Romain Gary.
