The course Creative Documentary Filmmaking K11 continues the inspiration, the practices and the achievements in documentary and experiment filmmaking by Hanoi DocLab. We are looking forward to this inspirational, meaningful encounter with you.

* Target audience: For people who want to tell stories, make poems, write essays with moving images; explore the world and portray life through cinema.
* Location: Hanoi DocLab, No. 11, sub-lane 12, lane 378 Thuy Khue, Hanoi
* Duration: 3.5 months with 2 phase:

– Phase 1: Participants study in class together for 12 sessions, each lasts 3 hours (the 6 first sessions will be divided into 2 sessions/week, taking place from 6.30 pm – 9.30 pm on Thursdays and 8.30 am – 11.30 am on Sundays; the 6 later sessions will be divided into 1 session/week, taking place from 6.30 pm – 9.30 pm on Thursday; from mid-Oct to mid-Dec 2019).

– Phase 2: Participants has 1 month to finish their film project with consultancy on request.

* Course details: 4 main topics interlaced:
– Determine the meaning of filmmaking: Differentiate filmmaking directions in terms of objective, relation between reality and human; analyzing examples.
– Techniques used on-site, equipment and software techniques: Filming, recording, lighting, interview, editing.
– Construct the cinematographic aesthetic world: Understanding and designing a world on screen
– Individual project management: Brainstorming, finding resources, writing script, planning, scouting opportunities to make your movie public.

This course is developed according to our participants’ suggestions. The first 6 lessons comprises of presentations, instructions and introductory discussions for everyone; the last 6 sessions revolves around the film making process of each individual, through which every participant can understand the main content of the course. In Phase 2, discussion between the instructor and student depends on individual needs of each student.

* Application process:
After registering through this link, you will:
– Join an intensive week watching films at DOCLAB, record your understanding about the movies and submit it after each screening. The schedule will be sent to you via email.
– One week later, you will receive the announcement to continue with the interview round. You will need to send us in advance 5 photos you like (taken by you or others), with a concise essay stating why they are your favorites and why you choose them, through [email protected] (Mail subject: Photos for Documentary film course K11). After that, you will receive an invitation for a direct interview to see if the course suits you and vice-versa. The result will be sent to you via email within 1 week.

Note: The deadline for application 30 Sep 2019. The number of participants is expected to be 14-17. During the course, you need to ensure 8-10 hours each week for assigned exercises and self-learning. This will help with visualizing your idea and realizing your movie.

Participants accepted into the course will need to make a fee payment of 5,000,000 VND (5 millions Vietnamese Dong). With those who have joined DOCLAB workshops, have DOCLAB 2019 membership cards, or are currently students, the fee would be 4,500,000 VND (4 millions 5 hundreds Vietnamese Dong). This year especially, there will be 2 scholarships (one full scholarship and one 50% scholarships) for the two most exceptional participants in the enrollment rounds.

* Instructors: Ngo Thanh and Ha Thanh met at DocLab and became friends after many years leading several courses at DocLab, trở thành bạn và sau nhiều năm cùng nhau hướng dẫn một số khóa học ở DocLab, Creative Documentary Filmmaking K10 and Life of Artists: Introduction to Theory and Practice of Contemporary Art.

Ngo Thanh: “I envision techniques in relation with gestures of freedom and moral, and individual in relation with community and history.”

After graduating from Hanoi National University of Education with a Master’s degree in Literary Theory, Ngo Thanh devoted herself to literature, cinema, and arts. Completed Critical Theory and Screenwriting courses, a part of the Cinema Project by Ford in collaboration with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, in 2009, she continues with cinema through joining film making courses at DOCLAB. Through 10 years of participating and gaining experience from classes, projects, and from local and international independent artists, she gradually shaped her creative focus, which are individual films, essay films and film making (visit her blog here).

Notable works: Fiction (2009) shown at Asian visions Film Festival, Philippines, 2012; The Sand (2011) won First prize at VIETDOCS 2010/2011; Video Letter (2012) shown at Metropolitan Museum of Photography Tokyo, Japan, 2013.

Phung Ha Thanh: “Filmmaking is about discovery the ability of images – sounds to stay together.”
A cinephile, a researcher on education, aesthetic and creativity. Her PhD thesis at the Michigan State University (USA) was about creativity schemes in the modern age (visit her blog or Facebook page).
