For his well-known compositions, Tommy Emmanuel has been nominated for Grammy Awards twice, even though “… I still haven’t had any training, I still don’t read or write music. I can write you a song, I just can’t write it out on paper,” he said in a TEDx session in Melbourne in 2014. With a very natural way of learning and playing the guitar, not following the convention, Tommy has inspired many generations of listeners who admire him.

Born in 1955, Tommy started learning guitar since the age of 4, with a career more than 5-decade long. He has fascinated hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world. His concerts are well-known for his humor and his lively, passionate performances. Performing live for his fans is a very important thing for Tommy. Now at the age of 60, he still has around 300 performances each year.

Fingerstyle – the new genre of solo guitar music in Vietnam – has been thriving in the recent years. One simple way to describe fingerstyle is “one-man band with only one guitar” – only one performer can replace an entire band (integrating the percussion parts onto the guitar). The most unique and captivating aspect of this genre is how the performer can simultaneously play the melody and the percussion by using skillful techniques of hitting the body of the guitar to breathe life into his songs. This is a modern guitar genre, its sound is the melodies of youth. Fingerstyle brings about a whole new perspective of the acoustic guitar.
