“Maria de Buenos Aires” is a Tango Opera. It is a story of Maria in the underworld of Buenos Aires. Born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires on “…a day when god was drunk”, Maria lives out a brief, violent existence and tumultuous streets of Buenos Aires – marginalized as an object of sexual desire but well aware of her powers of seduction. Working as a prostitute and in a whirlpool of a lost love, she eventually falls in love with Tango. The story follows her life and death, dissolves into the beauty of the Buenos Aires women and the immortal Tango dance, forever in love.

For reference: Watch a trailer of the opera created by artists at the Staatsoperette Dresden theater in Germany:

“Maria de Buenos Aires” is considered as a declaration of “New Tango”, written by composer Astor Piazzolla, who uses Tango as a musical material to make the Opera. The accompanying ensemble – including strings, guitar, piano and copious percussion – is based on the traditional tango orchestra.

Reviewing about Maria de Buenos Aires, Emeritus Artist Tran Ly Ly, Director of VNOB, stated: “Maria is the tango. She is the history and heart and soul of Argentina. She is the subject that inspires and animates the poetry of Horacio Ferrer and lives vibrantly in tandem with the inventive and inspired music of Astor Piazzolla”.
