Film screening and discussion with Hans Hattop

At DOCLAB this week, Hans Hattop will present a variety of new film work samples from HFF Konrad Wolf (Potsdam Film & Television Academy) and discuss about the current development of the art of documentary filmmaking — especially documentary cinematography — in Germany.

Hans has worked as director of photography in about 30 documentaries and 25 short feature films and as director/author in some 10 documentaries. He also is author of several fictional programmes. Hans has taught at HFF since 1973, and has taught practical camera work in Vietnam since 1997.

HFF as the GDR academy for film and television was established in 1954 with teaching methods based on the techniques developed at the Moscow Film School (VGIK). After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the GDR, it was taken over by the state of Brandenburg as the Film & Television Academy (HFF) “Konrad Wolf.” Today it has the status of an art academy.

Films and excerpts to be screened include:
1. Embodied (dir: Niclas Reed, 29’, experimental documentary, 2007)
2. Die Ideale/The Ideal (dir: Sven Jakob, 7’, exp. Documentary, 2005)
3. Eggesin möglicherweise/ Eggesin … Maybe (dir Olaf Winkler, exp. Doc, 84’, 2005)
4. Eisenfresser/Ironeaters (dir Shaheen Dill-Riaz, documentary, 2007)
5. Gute Nachrichten aus der Kampfzone / Good news from the combat zone (dir Julia Weingarten, 2009)

The screening followed by discussions with Hans is highly recommended for documentary filmmakers and film students.

The film has English and Vietnamese subtitles.
The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only.
