A Literary Event at Hanoi Social Club
Thu 17 Apr 2014, 8 – 10 pm
Hanoi Social Club
From Hanoi Social Club:
Claire Barnard is an American writer who has lived in Hanoi for over three years, and who has for a long time hesitated to write about the complicated city she now calls home. The Four Lakes Project is her endeavor, in prose and poetry, to break away from the familiar terrain that usually informs her work, and to take Hanoi as her inspiration. Her essay is a contemplation of place, the imagination and the poetry-writing process. Her poems, rhythmic and subtle, evoke physical and emotional landscapes inextricably bound up with one other.
Collaboration was key to this project. The poems will be accompanied by specially made short films (by Jacques Smit), and music (by Stephen Hoang). The dual-language chapbook available at the door features original illustrations by artist Heather Chan, and translations by Nhã Thuyên.
The evening will open with water-themed selections by poet, essayist, and translator Nguyễn Quí Đức (of Tadioto) and local playwright Matt Barns.
This is a literary event you won’t want to miss.
Entry fee: 60,000 (book included)
