New Films from Southeast Asia in HCMC at European – Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival 2015

14 and 18 Jun 2015
Hoa Sen University
From Goethe Institut:
In the first part of a two-part special series within the European-Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival, new films by young filmmakers from Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam will be presented on Sunday, June 14. Moreover, two Docfilm Networks will be presented in the afternoon: Lumière du Monde – EurasiaDoc and DocNet SEA “Dare to Dream”.
The afternoon program will be followed in the evening by the award-winning music documentary Sound of Heimat by German director Arne Birkenstock, who will personally present his film. He describes in a humorous way the turbulent journey of the New Zealand saxophonist Hayden Chisholm through the German music landscape. Far removed from clichés, Chisholm explores both traditional and modern paths of German music and invites the viewer to join him on a unique journey of discovery.
The films in the special series display a dazzling range of topics; the tone alternates between humorous and serious. The various locations and characters lead the audience to places outside of the public eye and tell the stories of those who often have no voice.
The audience is invited, for example, to cheer on the superwomen of the Laotian Women’s National Team, who demonstrate with untiring zeal and passionate devotion that rugby is a sport for everyone, while the contribution from Thailand portrays the lives of villagers in northern Thailand who live far from highways and without running water and electricity.
