About artist: Nguyễn Duy Thành is a performance artist and choreographer based in Hanoi. Starting with his passion for hip-hop, Duy Thành has been pursuing his performance career for the past 17 years and participating in numerous multicultural and multidisciplinary projects. He developed a distinct language of movement that bears both an intense physical energy and the abstract power of Asian energy. In his creations, Nguyễn Duy Thành focuses on spatiality and the emotions that propel him to move to connect with the space. His performance philosophy aims towards equality between the roles of performers, sound, lighting, props, and space. Thành participated in Chak Bak (2010) by French choreographer Sebatien Ramizer, Thiền (2012), Yes Yes No No 1 (2015), Yes Yes No No 2 (2016), and Ngày, tháng, năm… by choreographer Trần Ly Ly. He also performed in Hanoi Stardust by German choreographer Arco Renz in Europe meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2014 in Hanoi, and had toured in Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands in 2015. After participating in Goethe Institut’s Summer Camp for Music and Dance in 2018, world-renowned German stage director-composer Heiner Goebbels invited Nguyễn Duy Thành to perform in the theatrical installation piece Everything That Happened And Would Happen. Produced by Artangel (UK), the piece appeared in major art festivals in Manchester (UK, 2018), New York (US, 2019), Bochum (Germany, 2019), and St. Petersburg (Russia, 2019). In 2019, his work Thán was introduced in Hanoi Dance Fest – a festival co-organized by Goethe Institut, Vietnam National Opera & Ballet, and Institut Français.

Remarkable activities/projects in 2020 : In 2020, Nguyễn Duy Thành collaborated with Phú Phạm and Đặng Xuân Trường in “Bougainvillea – A Fairy Tale” – a combination of contemporary dance and electronic music in the album of the same name produced by Phú Phạm. The performance was part of Goethe Institut Culture Lab. He also performed in CAB Hoian’s CABCON2020. In the same year, Nguyễn Duy Thành and several other artists founded the art group Scarab with artistic activities focusing on film, performance and fashion.

Hanoi Grapevine’s Finest aims to become an annual honoring event, organized and selected by Hanoi Grapevine, Pro-active Audience Network (PAN) and the audience community. The event seeks to honor individuals, organizations, projects and activities whose work in the creative arts has had an impact on the community, in order to foster artistic development, promote media coverage and further the influence of arts and culture on the community in a broader and more meaningful manner.
