Meet the director of ‘Football Under Cover’, one of the films in this year’s German Film Festival. David Assmann will present his film and discuss it after the screening.

David Assmann, born in 1978 in Heidelberg, grew up in Berlin, Jerusalem and Santa Monica. He has studied media dramaturgy at the University of Mainz since 2001. He works regularly on film, music and theater projects, and hosts a radio programm on film and music. After completing several short films, Football under Cover is his first longer documentary film and at the same time the conclusion of his studies.

Football under Cover
In the end the final score is almost irrelevant; the true success is that the soccer game between a small Berlin women’s team and the Iranian National Women’s team actually takes place. David Assmann follows the long and rocky road leading to a meeting of these two teams in Teheran, against the resistance of the Ireanian government and the secret service, the denial of visas, sponsors bailing out, and a variety of burocratic hurdles. Football under Cover makes clear that sports is always political. Precisely because of this the film becomes a statement for women’s rights and a vehicle of hope for change in a state which retsricts rights mainly to ist female citizens. But the film also shows encounters between young women who are not after all so different from one another: they love soccer, and in Berlin as in Iran, David Beckham hangs above the bed.

Football under Cover was an audience favorite at the Berlinale 2008.

Gần như chẳng ai buồn quan tâm đến kết quả. Điều quan trọng nhất là trận đấu giữa câu lạc bộ bóng đá nữ Berlin và đội tuyển bóng đá nữ quốc gia Iran đã diễn ra. Để đưa hai đội bóng đá nữ này đến được trận đấu tại Teheran, đạo diễn David Assmann đã dành cho dự án rất nhiều thời gian và chia sẻ những gian nan vì sự phản đối của chính phủ và bộ nội vụ Iran: không xin được thị thực xuất nhập cảnh, sự rút lui của các nhà tài trợ, thủ tục hành chính lằng nhằng. Bóng đá và khăn trùm đầu đã chứng minh, thể thao cũng là chính trị. Bộ phim đã nêu ra một vấn đề về quyền phụ nữ và hy vọng vào những sự thay đổi về luật cho phụ nữ của một đất nước. Bộ phim cũng kể về cuộc giao lưu giữa những phụ nữ trẻ, những người cùng chia sẻ tình yêu với bóng đá, và dù ở Berlin hay ở Iran thì ảnh của David Beckham cũng được treo trong phòng của họ.

Bóng đá và khăn trùm đầu đã dành được giải Khán giả tại liên hoan phim quốc tế Berlinale 2008.
