Meeting with Writer Anna Moï

You are invited to a meeting with writer Anna Moï to discover her work, followed by discussions and readings of excerpts, with the participation of Dr. Manuel Bengoéchéa, who holds a Ph.D degree in literature.
Anna Moï, whose real name is Tran Thien Nga, was born on August 1, 1955 in Saigon, Vietnam. After obtaining a bachelor degree at the French lycée Marie Curie Saigon, she moved to Paris in 1970 where she studied history at the University of Nanterre.
Her meeting with stylists Troubled Agnes (Agnes B) and Philippe Guibourgé (Dior, Chanel) maked her want to work in fashion. In the 1980s, thanks to her stylist activities, she lived in Bangkok and Tokyo, travelling, and becoming a polyglot: she speaks Vietnamese, French, Thai, Japanese, English and German.
In 1992 she moved back to her hometown, Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City. She lives with her family in a traditional house in the heart of a banana plantation in the city. She began writing chronicles in French for a Vietnamese-French magazine. Taking a liking to writing, her columns are gradually transformed into real news on contemporary Vietnam. After two collections were published in 2001 and 2003 and gained great success, she brought all stories in those collection together in her book “Nostalgie de la rizière”.
Her first novel, which was published in 2004 by Gallimard, Black rice, abandoned the light and humorous style. In the book she told the tragic story of a former high school classmate who was detained and tortured in prison of Poulo Condor, located near a shore of Saigon in late 1960. From books to books, Anna Moi travels from Vietnam to France, from the world to her room. She is now immersed in the French literary world.
Her next novel, “The Poison Butterfly” will be released in January 2017 by Gallimard.

About the moderator:
Manuel Bengoechea moved to Mauritania in 2010, where he started to teach French literature in Normale Supérieure Nouakchhott, and collaborated in opening the first master Francophone literature at this university. He also led the French Office of the book Institute of Nouakchott, where he organized support for the French-language book sector in Mauritania (libraries, booksellers and publishers), as well as literary events (monthly literary meetings for 4 years and two international poetry festivals.
