From Heritage Space:

Come to the workshop with George Burchett: “Make an elephant – Save an elephant”. The workshop is a part of program Month of Arts Practice 2016 in order to promote the interactive exchange between the artist and the public.

* ACTIVITIES:
Participants will make a simple elephant with clay in order to develop awareness of the necessity of respecting and protecting the elephants of Vietnam which are in danger of extinction.

All participants get introduced to basic clay modeling and produce a clay elephant which will be exhibited at the end of the project (to be discussed with organizers…).

* ABOUT THE ARTIST:

George Burchett, born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1955. Graduated with Masters Degree in mural art from the Fine Arts Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1974. Has lived and worked as an artist in Paris, France; Sofia, Bulgaria; Sydney, Australia. Has exhibited and completed corporate and public projects/commissions in Paris, Sofia, Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Hanoi, Hoa Binh. Now lives and works in Hanoi.

“My current concern, as an artist and as a citizen of the world, is how to protect our natural environment. By ‘natural’, I don’t mean only ‘nature’. I also mean traditional cultures, national customs, all the things that make a people and an individual unique. Every Vietnamese, old and young, is familiar with the image of the elephant as part of the history, legends, the spiritual and cultural identity of Vietnam. But not too many people are aware that the elephants of Vietnam are on the brink of extinction. Their disappearance would not only be an ecological disaster – for Vietnam and the world – but also a tragic and irreversible loss to Vietnam’s culture and collective identity. Elephants played an important role in Vietnam’s long and heroic history of defending the country against invaders. Now is the time to repay the elephants by treating them with the respect due to heroes and war veterans.”

* ABOUT “MONTH OF ARTS PRACTICE”

Month of Arts Practice is an annual project of Heritage Space and was initiated by artist Tran Trong Vu, aiming to create space for composing, testing, practicing new art ideas, upon cooperation and interaction of international and Vietnamese artists.

In 2015, Month of Arts Practice has been very successful with the theme “Brownian Movement”. This year, the program also will be an opportunity for Vietnam artists with practice and learning experience with reputed international artists during 6 weeks (from 17 September to 31 October 2016). Moreover, in order to support the development of Vietnam Contemporary Art, the organizer Heritage Space would like to create an open and interactive forum through a series of activities to introduce and dialogue between artists, professionals and the public.

With the theme “Finite and Infinite”, the artists participating in Month for Arts Practice-version 2nd will find ways to change the surface, the limited spaces, and the specific images. They will put on those other factors so that there are no longer limits or borders. For example, the visual game of mirrors, light, or repeated shapes, the idea behind pictures, or the integration of mathematics, geometry, philosophy into art.

* LANGUAGE: Vietnamese, English with translation.

* HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Free entry. Please register here.
