The Week of Sound is an opportunity for audience to gain a better understanding of sounds in cinema and experience, in a deeper way, the films that have special sound effects. The three main activities of the week are

1. Seminars from October 25-28 (14h) with France’s leading sound expert – engineer Daniel Deshays

Daniel Deshays is a sound engineer, sound director, lecturer, essayist, university professor and the author of numerous works devoted to the sound. Though not a familiar figure to the general public, he is the producer behind several works in the field of sound and one of the last sound experts alive after Antoine Bonfanti and Yann Parenthoën passed away. Daniel Deshays has worked with many filmmakers, theater directors, choreographers, artists and curators. In the last 40 years, with and through sound, he discovered new sound boundaries. He applies sounds as well as he researches about them.

Daniel Deshays will be our main speaker at the seminars. The clips from films will be screened, each raising a theme about sound that will be later discussed. Daniel Deshays will guide audience to a more comprehensive and deeper view on “sound” through these themes.

2. Screening of films with special sound effects

The Week of Sound will commence with a premiere screening of the film “A falss awakening” (-16) by Nguyen Trung Kien. Kien was born in 1992 and started to make independent film in 2010. He graduated from the University of Theatre and Cinema in Hanoi in 2014 with a degree in cinematography.

Audience will have chance to talk with the director and other members of the filmmaking camp that Kien took part in after the screening.

Also, after each seminar with Daniel Deshays, audience will get to experience a film with special sound effect at 8 pm (in French with Vietnamese subtitles). The films are:

>>> “Libera me” / Alain Cavalier

>>> “Une femme est une femme” / Jean-Luc Godard

>>> “Michael Kohlhaas” / Arnaud Des Pallières

3. Concert – Silent Film

“A Page of Madness” / Teinosuke Kinugasa

A masterpiece of world silent cinema, the film is set in an asylum. Mounted in a maddening maelstrom, the film tells the story of asylum superintendent, whose wife is one of the patients. One day their daughter arrives at the asylum to announce her engagement to her mother. The meeting starts intrigues and flashbacks series that reveal the history of the family.
