Suzanne’s Dresses
Coutour Adorable de Maritta
For every Art Vietnam exhibition opening, gallery director Suzanne Lecht dresses in clothes custom-made for the occasion.
Maritta Nurmi’s exhibition was no exception – except that in this case the clothes were made from fabrics designed by the artist. And that Suzanne and Maritta wore matching outfits.
The fun they had was obvious!

And hurry to catch the show. It closes on Jan 7 10th!
From Art Vietnam:
What is fashion? What is design? And most persistently…What is Art?
It’s these burning questions and more that drove Finnish-born, Hanoi-based artist Maritta Nurmi from Africa to India and back to us, culminating in her most playful collection of artworks yet, Couture Adorable de Maritta.
Maritta’s idea to make her own textiles germinated during an artist’s residency she undertook in 2009 in Benin, west Africa, where she admired the gorgeous, amazingly colorful outfits of the African people. Shortly after, she was on another great adventure, this time in India, where her idea ‘materialized’ into 100 meters of pure cotton upon which she had six of her Benin paintings digitally printed.
Returning to Hanoi, the artist set to work ‘copying’ her clothing and assembling unique outfits in the same spirit as how she creates her paintings: layers on layers. The result? Maritta’s own eclectic, multicultural mode of fashion was born.
