From Goethe Institut:
You are invited to the screen of “Rhythm is It!” at the courtyard of Goethe Institut. Star guest is director Enrique Sanchez Lansch who will be happy to answer questions from the audience after the screening.

Berlin, January 2003: In the Arena, the old bus depot in Berlin’s industrial port area, something amazing is happening: 250 children and young people are dancing Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”, choreographed by Royston Maldoom and accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic under its chief conductor Simon Rattle.

“Rhythm is It!” documents the several months of rehearsals from the perspective of three young people. They come, like most of the young project participants, from low-income families. Few of them have previously had any contact with classical music, but now they are immersed Stravinsky’s musical world and theyblossom. Almost in passing, but no less exciting, Simon Rattle and Royston Maldoom are portrayed with their commitment to social deprivation. Their enthusiasm carries the production, but conflicts cast doubt on the realization of the project. During the rehearsal phase, the young people go through highs and lows, alternating between insecurity and self-confidence. Nevertheless, during the project the young dancers discover previously hidden facets of their personalities.

The film directors Enrique Sánchez Lansch and Thomas Grube succeed in a unique way in Rhythm is it! to bridge the gap between the rehearsals of the young people and the work of the Berlin Philharmonic. Rhythm is it! offers a glimpse into a world full of fascination for music and dance, which is able to move far more than the young dancers on the stage.

Enrique Sánchez Lansch, born in 1963, grew up in Spain and later in Germany. During his studies, he began working as an assistant director and then as director and writer of music and documentary films.Following his master’s degree and several years of directing and producing fiction series, he studied at Columbia University, New York and the University of California, Los Angeles. Since 2002 Sánchez Lanschlives and works in Berlin, mainly as a director and writer of documentary films, many of them related to music.
