From Goethe Institut:
“Woyzeck” is a fragment of a drama of the German physician and poet Georg Büchner (1813-1837). It was performed for the first time in Munich in 1913. Since then, it has been translated into numerous languages and many times re-interpreted. It is one of the most frequently performed drama and has by far the strongest influence on German literature. “Woyzeck” inspired numerous artists to create something of its own.
Werner Herzog filmed Georg Büchner’s “Woyzeck” 1979, with Klaus Kinsky starring in the main role. Herzog´s “Woyzeck” is so far the best-known adaptation of the piece. Herzog works closely on the literary text and uses long settings in the scenes to maintain an authentic impression of the play. The sharp cuts between the scenes are reminiscent of the fragmentary of “Woyzeck”.
