Mid-Autumn Festival and Metropole Mooncake

As a colourful time of year, Mid-Autumn Festival or “Tet Trung Thu” is celebrated throughout the eighth lunar month, in particular on the day of the first full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, although the moon is then at its greatest distance from the earth, it appears larger than at any time of the year and takes on a reddish glow. In its partial phases, the moon represents the incompleteness of life and potential for completeness, fullness and prosperity. The Festival is then a celebration and a prayer for the fullness and completeness of life.

Together with fairytales, plentiful fruits and cheerful dragon dance, mooncakes are a feature of this hilarious occasion. Some cakes are round and white, called “banh deo”; others are square and golden brown, called “banh nuong”. Specially, there is another shape of a carp, an animal that traditionally represents the soul of the moon. Mooncakes are unleavened and originally filled with ground lotus seed, ground bean, salted egg, roasted nuts and flavourful candied pork fat.

In recent years, moon cake filling has veered from the traditional as truly exotic ingredients have been introduced. In addition to traditional varieties such as: Traditional Mix, Lotus with Young Rice, Hotel Metropole Hanoi has created new flavours: Red bean and mango, Caramel with dry fig and candied orange. All moon cakes are hand-baked and preservative free, made by Executive Sous Chef Nguyen Thanh Van and her team from authentic recipes and infused with the Metropole’s gourmet touch.
