British Council – City Talk – ‘Urban Beats'
Thurs 05 Mar, 7pm
This will be the century of the city – nowhere more so than in East Asia and the arts have always played a significant role in shaping the quality of life in our cities.
There is no denying the fact that music has played an important role in the intellectual and spiritual life of urban citizens. Vietnamese modern music, from pop, rock to experimental music, intentionally or unintentionally, has always been influenced by the social context and the story of music also reflects life in our time and our culture.
Music follows the changes in urban life and vice versa- fast changing cities in the 21st century have shaped the musical trends around the world.
By examining music and urban changes in the 21st century, the British Council’s CityTalk in March 2009 entitled ‘Urban Beats’ will hopefully provoke further thinking about this interactive relationship. The talk will be led by TV presenter My Linh with the participation of composers Phu Quang, Kim Ngoc and Dr Barley Norton – Senior Lecturer in Ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
‘Urban Beats’ will take place at 7.00 pm on Thursday 5 March at the S9 Studio, Vietnam Television, 844 De La Thanh and invitations can be collected from the British Council, 20 Thuy Khue from 26 February 2009.
The debate will be in Vietnamese & English with simultaneous translation.
This CityTalk is organised by the British Council Vietnam in collaboration with the Vietnam Television.
