Escheresque at Mai

The best thing about going to see the painting and sculpture exhibition ‘3D White’ by Nguyen Quan is the Esheresque experience of the stairs. You can enter through the Mai Gallery in Hang Gai or the spanking new Art Talk Café at 12 Quan Su. The two are connected by a series of art spaces and corridors that make you feel that you may be in one of those Escher lithographs where the stairs seem to go everywhere and nowhere.

Stone Sea

The potential to display quality exhibitions is breathtaking and I wish I had the chance and money to curate a show or two of scintillating art work there (one can have one’s pipe dreams!).

Apart from the three, rather scintillating white sculptures on show, the white nude paintings and the collages are interesting but it’s all a bit too placid. One large collage triptych is arresting.

Stone Sails

The trip to see it is worth it though, if only for the stairs and the potential.
