From L’Espace:
You are invited to the roundtable discussion “Memories of the war” by Charles de Gaulle on the occasion of publishing the book’s first volume in Vietnamese.
Speakers:
– Mr. Jean-Noel Poirier, Ambassador of France in Vietnam
– Mr. Pierre Journoud, Professor of contemporary history at the Paul-Valéry Montpellier University
– Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh, Rector of the National University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, Professor of History
The first of the three volumes of General de Gaulle’s war memoirs, “The Call”, was published in 1954, the year of ending the Indochina war. With a “certain idea” of France and its language, the author, removed from power since 1946, set out the first political and military battles of Free France in World War II, between 1940 and 1942.
The book became successful immediately after published in France.
On the occasion of publishing its first volume in Vietnamese, three speakers will discuss “the biggest French collective adventure of the century and the fierce struggle by a rebel to revive France and make it a victorious power” (Jean-Louis Cremieux-Brilhac).
