From the organizer:
TNT Theatre Britain return to Vietnam with OLIVER TWIST in May 2012. This production has toured worldwide and been performed in over thirty countries. Charles Dickens’ masterpiece is brought to the stage in a dynamic performance that integrates live music with powerful physical theatre, comedy with tragedy and even a dash of audience participation! This is the real OLIVER TWIST as portrayed by Dickens, the first modern novel the first novel to have a child as its hero and the first novel to explore the industrial city. But it is also a love story, a comedy, a crime thriller and a dark exposure of the link between poverty and crime. What better way to celebrate Charles Dickens two hundredth birthday than to watch this acclaimed version of his best known work.

TNT and presented by ADG Europe, and this is their fourth production in Vietnam, having previously presented ROMEO AND JULIET, A CHRISTMAS CAROL and MACBETH.
The play id written and directed by Paul Stebbings and produced by Grantly Marshall. The musical score is by Thomas Johnson. The production is full of action and is easy to understand even for those whose English is not first rate. OLIVER TWIST tours to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi as part of a their current world tour. The production has been hailed as “ a brilliant version of Dickens’ masterpiece” (Times of Malta) and “ A stunning and accessible theatrical performance” (Japan Times), “A dark and thrilling piece of music theatre” (German press). The company have been named as “the best touring theatre company in the world” China National TV and “The most interesting development on the current theatrical scene” The Guardian (London).
Oliver Twist

OLIVER TWIST has been described as the first modern novel. It is one of the few novels whose characters have entered into modern myth- Fagin, Bill, Nancy and the Artful Dodger can claim to be some of the best known literary creations outside of Shakespeare. The enormous energy of these characters and the full blooded portrait of the first modern urban nightmare, London, make the story not only exciting and dramatic, but also truly contemporary.

The themes and social issues raised by Dickens are as relevant today as when it was first published over one hundred and fifty years ago. The central theme is the link between poverty and crime. Beyond that it explores the way society treats its weakest members.

Dickens’ style is highly theatrical, and indeed he himself gave dramatic readings of much of OLIVER TWIST to huge audiences in Britain and the USA. Dickens’ style switches between the almost documentary to the comic, from action packed narrative to emotional drama.

TNT sweep away the sentimentality of so many versions and present the story through the eyes of Fagin as he stands on the gallows awaiting execution. The story is his last attempt at justifying his life of crime. The audience too must answer if he was indeed at fault. Is he a criminal or a victim? Does he care for his boy thieves or does he exploit them?
