The Goethe-Institut Vietnam in collaboration with The Run and XplusX Studio calls for participation in a 5-day intensive workshop from researcher-storytellers who are looking for a new storytelling language and want to transform their data or research materials through an interdisciplinary approach.

This workshop aims to explore new ways for research storytelling and foster collaboration between researchers and performance artists in Vietnam, via the approach of documentary theatre.

Documentary theater is where research meets performance. It uses real-life materials – field notes, interviews, photos, community stories – to make theater. A documentary theater work, instead of re-enacting or representing, presents the story as it is by using verbatim materials.

This documentary theatre workshop is open to a wide range of participants from different disciplines. We welcome applicants who might be a student, independent researcher, community organizer, journalist, writer, or organizer…

Join us to learn how to breathe life into data
An invitation to a 5-day workshop in Da Lat to:
– Learn how to transform research materials into performance with mentorship from established German artists
– Explore new ways for research storytelling
– Exchange ideas with other researcher-storytellers from across Vietnam
– This workshop is completely free!! On top of that, accommodation in Da Lat and travel expenses from your place of residence (within Vietnam) to Da Lat will be covered by the Goethe-Institut.

Selection procedure
– A selection committee from Goethe-Institut Vietnam, The Run and XplusX Studio will review applications and make its selection in July.
– Successful applicants will be informed by mid-July 2025.
– The workshop will take place daily from August 2–6, 2025.

How to apply?
To respond to this call, please prepare:
– CV – introduce your background and relevant projects
– Portfolio or description of a past/ongoing research project – show how you’ve worked with real-life materials
– Motivation letter (~350 words) – share why you want to join, what you expect to learn, and why you need to tell your research-based stories

Upload everything to 1 Google Drive folder and submit via the application form.

+ June 20, 2025: Application deadline
+ June 30 – July 5, 2025: Result announcement
+ August 2-6, 2025: Workshop implementation

DokuTheater Workshop is a program series co-organized by the Goethe-Institut in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The program in Vietnam is organized in collaboration with The Run and XplusX Studio.

Selected works from the workshop in Vietnam will be invited to travel and be introduced in Indonesia later this year of 2025.
