From Goethe-Institut:
The Goethe-Institut Hanoi now invites you to a “best of” from 40 years of German video art. The 43 selected videos, shown digitally to protect the valuable originals, give an exemplary insight into some forty years of video art from Germany. Among them are works by famous artists such as Joseph Beuys, Wolf Kahler, Lutz Dammbeck, Nam June Paik and others.
Video art emerged in the 60s in the U.S. and Germany and has become one of the most influential genres of art of the 20th Century. Technical systems have developed further, changed or even disappeared: the former TV screen has given way to the computer monitor, video cassettes to software programs and hard drives. The biggest challenge of video art is its own mortality, due to the short life of the electronic media. Thus, the survival of video art is dependent on a never-ending process of adaptation to new technological standards. 40jahrevideokunst.de, an initiative of the Federal Cultural Foundation, has therefore taken on the task of the rescue, care and dissemination of video art. Five important museums in Germany have joined forces to realize this project, under the direction of Karlsruhe ZKM (Center for Art and Media Technology). Here video art works are professionally archived, digitized, and protected from disappearing.
