From Goethe Institut:
Come to the Photograph exhibition of urban architecture in Berlin by architect and photographer Gerrit Engel.
Born in 1965 in Essen, Germany, Gerrit Engel studied architecture and photography at the Technical University of Munich and the New York City College. He currently lives and works in Berlin.
The photographs of Gerrit Engel resemble portraits, except that they do not show people, but houses. In recent years Engel puts his focus mainly on the cities of New York and Berlin. What we see at the Goethe-Gallery is the touring exhibition of the Goethe-Institut: “Gerrit Engel: Berlin. Fotografien”, a series of colour photographs of urban architecture in Berlin. Seemingly objective and arranged in chronological sequence, each building is described with a picture. All images are portrayed in the same manner – with a white sky, a reduced palette and a uniform depth of field – and could hardly be more objective. As they often show only the physiognomy of the architecture, viewers see the architecture as buildings without any bias nor prejudice. The colour images give insight into the architectural history of Berlin.
Free entrance.
