From the organizer:

Following serial concerts to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, we proudly presents a concert performed by Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra in collaboration with guest artists from USA and Singapore: Concert “Legacy”.

The concert has a wonderful program with the remarkable works of two renowned German composers: Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. The orchestra would bring to the audience many emotions from the intense melodies of Beethoven – Symphony No. 5, one of the most famous symphonies in the world, and the gigantic Piano Concerto No. 1 by Brahms which is not performed frequently in Vietnam.

Beethoven composed the Symphony No. 5 in 1808 when he was 37 years old. This Symphony consists of four movements which includes the familiar iconic “knock by fate” theme of the 1st movement. The whole symphony is the journey through 4 stages of feeling: the desperate fear, the tense struggle, the final victory, praising love life. Listen to the symphony through the performance of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra here:

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor is one of the most monumental concertos written for Piano and Orchestra. Brahms had gave the premiere at Hannover, Germany in 1853 after he had composed and edited it for 5 years. Those first gestures are so powerful and impress themselves upon us so forcefully that, if we are not listening with all our attention, we can easily overlook how much of this movement is quiet and reflective. The concert promises to give the audience the memorable moments through the virtuoso performance combination with sublime feelings of two guest artists from the United States, Ms. Apo Hsu – conductor and from Singapore, pianist Albert Tiu, together with Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra.

Maestre Hsu began her tenure as the Orchestra Director at the National Taiwan Normal University in the fall of 2003. Since the summers of 2000, Ms. Hsu serves as a guest faculty member at The Conductor’s Institute at Bard College in New York. Guest appearances have taken Maestra Hsu all over the US as well as Russia, Asia, South America and Australia.

Born in Cebu, Philippines, Albert Tiu has been described as “an artist of uncommon abilities” by American Record Guide. He is currently an Associate Professor of Piano at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (Singapore). In 1996, he won First Prize in the UNISA International Piano Competition in Pretoria. He is also a prize-winner in Calgary (Honens), Santander (Paloma O’Shea) and Helsinki (Maj Lind).
