Vietnam Feature Films studio (VFS)
4 Thuy Khue, Tay Ho district, Hanoi

From the organizer:

This complex, engaging film from the late 1990s by Director Thanh Van is based on the excellent script of writer Nguyen Quang Lap who was inspired by the novel “Three people at the train station” (By Huu Phuong). The film addresses the long-lasting effects of war on people’s lives in a sea-side village somewhere in Central Viet Nam.

A man named Canh, is returning to his village after a 20 years’ absence, after Vietnam’s reunification. His wife, Thoa, has been faithfully awaiting his return. However, her hopes of reuniting with her husband and quietly passing their days together is given a swift kick into the dust. The unpleasant reality is that he has remarried and fathered a child during his absence. Will Canh stay with Thoa or will he continue his new life with his second wife, Tam?

Skillfully acted and directed, Sandy Lives is full of subtleties and cultural insights, particularly for non-Vietnamese. By reflecting on the intrinsic trauma of people, especially women in the aftermath of the war, Sandy Lives won various domestic and international outstanding prizes, including:

– Golden prize, Asian Pacific Film Festival 2000;
– Golden Lotus, the 13rd Vietnam Film Festival;
– Special prize, International Film Festival Amiens 2000 held in France – OCIC Award and Special Mention;
