You are invited to the film screening of “Le Sel de la Terre” (The Salt of the Earth) by Bernard Surugue.
For the last few decades, a soil salinization phenomenon has been gravely affecting the rice fields in northeastern Thailand. Food supply for millions of people in Isaan province has been put at risk because of the “salt of the earth”. To find a solution for this disaster that is eating away at crops and endangering poor village communities, Thai authorities brought scientists together in a Franco-Thai research program. Scientists installed a laboratory field right at the center of the rice field. For more than six years – with support from the farmers – researchers worked day and night to study the phenomenon in all its aspects right on the fields of Isaan. Located in the heart of the rice civilization, the peasants of Isaan shared their knowledge with the scientists, together opening promising prospects for a better life and by preserving their most sacred heritage: rice.
