You are invited to conference “Marcel Mauss and Essay of Gift” with the participation of Olivier Tessier, Associate Professor of EFEO (The French School of Asian Studies) and literary critic Do Lai Thuy.
Being a student and nephew of E. Durkheim, Marcel Mauss (1872 – 1950) became famous with his work “Essay of gift”, published in 1925 in magazine “L’Année sociologique”. From 1901, he joined in editor committee of this magazine and in 1925, with Lucien Lévy-Bruhl and Paul Rivet, he established Ethnology Institute in Paris.
“In obsolete or ancient society, rules and benefits made people think that after receiving gift, they needed to give back by other gift. Which force in gift that pushes receiver to response by other gift?”. The fact is when he began to study the nature of exchange between people of Mélanésie in Alaska and in ancient Indian – European societies, Marcel Mauss realized that “this moral foundation and economy still exist in today society continuously and secretly”.
Language: French – Vietnamese simultaneous interpretation
