The Long Bien bridge is now over 100 years old (constructed from 1899 to 1902) and has always been of great importance to Hanoi and the northern region of Tonkin. The two-and-a-half kilometre long bridge that connects the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi with the western and northern areas is a strong visual expression in a marked country’s turbulent modern history.

The Bridge’s image is again featured in different genres and through the eyes of both Vietnamese and Danish directors:

Hanoi has Long Bien Bridge’, by director Pham Cuong and Vu Tru, shows the bridge as an important icon in Hanoi’s self-image.

Long Bien Bridge’ produced by three Danish directors Steen Møller Rasmussen, Cai Ulrich v. Platen and Peter Schultz Jørgensen. The documentary features the flow of life around a central nexus of society combining the genres of visual art and documentary. The documentary production is supported by the Cultural development and Exchange Fund (CDEF) of the Embassy of Denmark.

Under the bridge, On the water surface’ depicts the lives of underprivileged for whom the Bridge is, ”home”. The documentary is produced in 2004 by director Nguyen Sy Chung.
