From Goethe Institut:

Film screening and discussions on topic “Images of gay and transgender people in Vietnamese contemporary cinema”

Vietnamese filmmakers have been paying more attention to the topic of gay and transgender in recent years. LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people) characters are being portrayed and appear briefly on both television and motion picture screens. The topics of gender and sexuality are also mentioned more than before in media in Vietnam. Feature films “Chơi vơi” (Adrift, 2009) by director Bùi Thạc Chuyên, and “Bi, Đừng Sợ!” (Bi, Don’t be Afraid, 2010) by director Phan Đăng Di brought home awards from renowned international film festivals. Director Vũ Ngọc Đãng’s “Hot boy nổi loạn” (Lost in Paradise, 2011) brought the film to both international and domestic audience. Most recently, gay people, as portrayed in both foreign and Vietnamese characters, are featured in director Hàm Trần’s “Âm mưu giầy mũi nhọn” (High heels’ plot, 2013). The movie has gained success as one of the latest productions in Vietnam so far.

Through the demonstration of LGBTs in cinema, we hope to discuss about LGBTs and gender equality through cinema language and popular culture in our event. With this talk, a broader audience of both cinephiles, art lovers, LGBT people and heterosexuals, and anyone who cares about gender equality could join us to discuss more about the topics of: How LGBTs are being portrayed in film screen? Does cinematic representation of LGBT people manipulate, discriminate, or protect their rights and encourage them to raise gender equality awareness? How social, political, and economical influences have shaped their images? What do these movies tell us about LGBT communities in Vietnam? What do they tell us about the relationship between our dominating culture (where heterosexuals make the norms) and the LGBTs? And what action can we take to fight against any discrimination towards the LGBT people?

The program:

3pm-5pm
Renowned film director Phan Đăng Di will give a talk about “Images of gay and transgender people in Vietnamese contemporary cinema: Rebellion within frames”. Marcus Mạnh Cường Vũ – Festival Director of Yxine Film Fest – an annual online international short film festival will be the moderator of the following discussion.

5pm-6pm
Coffee break, light refreshments

6pm-8.30pm
Screening of Nguyễn Trinh Thi’s documantary “Love Man Love Woman” (2007, 52 minutes).
A panel discussion on topics of gay and transgender people in the popular Mother Goddess Religion – Đạo Mẫu, with the film director Nguyễn Trinh Thi, guest speaker Phạm Quỳnh Phương (ISEE) and moderated by Đặng Hoàng Giang will take place after the screening.

Summary:
In this documentary, the filmmaker follows Master Lưu Ngọc Đức, one of the most prominent spirit mediums in Hanoi, and his vibrant community through their rituals and everyday life. The film explores how effeminate and gay men in homophobic Vietnam have traditionally found community and expression in the country’s popular Mother Goddess Religion, Dao Mau.

(Written by Nguyễn Trinh Thi)
